Peel-Off Lid Composite Tubes

Hermetic protection combined with a controlled opening experience: our peel-off and easy-open composite cans pair a spiral-wound paperboard body with a sealed metal end, for products where freshness, aroma and a safe first open all matter.

Composite cylinder tube with peel-off foil lid

ArtasPack has been producing since 1986, and this range sits at the technical end of what a paper-based pack can do. Known in the trade as the composite can, it is a hybrid: a body built by spiral-winding layers of high-strength recycled kraft board, closed with a sealed metal end. The body carries the branding and the structure; the end closure decides the shelf life.

Two closure technologies are available, and the choice between them is usually made by the product, not by preference.

1. Peel-off ends (P.O.E.)

A peel-off end is made by heat-sealing an aluminium or composite foil onto a metal ring under heat and pressure. The design puts user experience and safety first.

  • Mechanism: the consumer pulls an ergonomic tab and the foil separates from the ring with controlled resistance. The opening force is roughly 15–25 newtons — less than half what a standard metal can requires.
  • Safety rim: the ring left behind has rounded, smooth edges. The razor-sharp edge of a conventional can is eliminated entirely, which matters for products children reach for and for older consumers.
  • Seal performance: the heat seal runs the full circumference, so the pack is hermetic until first opening.

2. Easy-open ends

An easy-open end is made entirely from metal — tinplate or aluminium — with a score line pressed or lasered into it in advance.

  • Mechanism: lifting the ring pull pierces the score line by leverage, and the end detaches as the ring is drawn back.
  • Durability: more resistant to impact and internal pressure than a peel-off end, which makes it the choice for carbonated or vacuum-packed products.
  • Full aperture: the whole end comes away, giving 100% access to powders, coffee or nuts — the consumer can use a scoop or a spoon comfortably.

Barrier technology and shelf-life engineering

Our composite cans do not offer passive protection; the barrier layers built into the body wall make them an active shelf-life system.

Layer analysis, outside in:

  • Outer label — the branding surface: coated, kraft or metallised paper, protected with varnish or lamination.
  • Board plies — layers of 100% recycled kraft paper forming the structural skeleton and giving the can its vertical crush resistance.
  • Inner liner — the layer that decides the product’s fate. Aluminium foil plus PE gives the highest barrier available: aluminium contributes near-zero transmission, PE contributes heat-sealability. Oxygen transmission rate and water vapour transmission rate are both effectively nil.

Combined with a seamed metal end, that barrier system delivers:

  • Oxidation control — fatty products such as nuts, crisps and coffee keep their profile far longer
  • Aroma retention — volatile compounds stay inside rather than migrating out through the wall
  • Moisture control — powders and ground product do not cake

A note for EU buyers: a composite can is a multi-material construction by definition, since the barrier and the end are metal. It is chosen for barrier performance. If your brief is driven by PPWR recyclability targets rather than shelf life, our plastic-free all-paperboard range is the better starting point, and we will say so rather than sell you the wrong family.

Design flexibility and 360-degree branding

The technical advantages come with a full branding surface. The label wraps the body without a break, so your design runs a continuous 360 degrees with no corner to interrupt the artwork.

Coated, kraft and metallised label stocks are available, finished with varnish, matt or gloss lamination, foil stamping or spot UV. We prepare the dieline to your can’s diameter and height, and our studio places your artwork onto it. Printing and post-press finishing are carried out with specialist partners we have worked with for years.

For food-contact applications we obtain the conformity declaration for the inner liner from our supplier and share it with you, along with the material composition, grammage and component weights your technical file needs.

Peel-off and easy-open composite cans are built for products where the barrier is the point:

  • Coffee and tea — aroma retention is the whole argument; a hermetic seal until first opening
  • Spices and powdered drinks — moisture control stops caking
  • Nuts, crisps and snacks — oxidation control on fatty products; the safety rim matters where children help themselves
  • Supplements and powdered nutrition — full aperture for scoop access
  • Infant and specialist nutrition — a tamper-evident first open the consumer can see

Before ordering we prepare printed or unprinted samples so you can test fill, seal and opening force with your own product.

A composite can gives you a metal can’s barrier with a paperboard body’s look, weight and print quality. The spiral-wound body is lighter than tinplate, takes a full-wrap label that a metal can cannot match for finish, and costs less to ship.

Compared with a flexible pouch it stands on shelf, protects against crushing and does not need a secondary display unit. Compared with glass it removes breakage risk in e-commerce shipping entirely.

The cylindrical form also removes the corner voids a rectangular pack leaves around a round product, which keeps you clear of the empty-space rules coming into force in the EU from 2030.

Body: spiral-wound recycled kraft board, wall thickness 1.5–3.0 mm depending on fill weight and stacking load.

Inner liner: aluminium foil with PE for the highest barrier; grease and moisture barriers where a full aluminium liner is not required.

Ends: peel-off foil on a metal ring, or full metal easy-open with a score line. Both can be combined with a plastic overcap for reclosing.

Label: coated, kraft or metallised, offset or digital, with varnish, lamination, foil stamping, embossing or spot UV.

We supply the dieline; our team places your artwork. Printed and unprinted samples are produced before series production begins.
